Sam Goes Birding for Bluebirds with Grandpa & Uncle Grant

April 28, 2014

It was a Monday, so the kids were off from daycare.  David had an appointment, so Maman brought the two boys over and dropped off Sam with his new bike.

David decided that he had time to check out the train before leaving with his mom.

Sam wanted to try out his bike and the old tractor too before heading out.  Of course, we had to read a few stories too.

Finally we got off to High Road near the race track to look for Bluebirds.  We checked all the nest boxes, but they all seemed to have Tree Swallows in them.  We decided to walk down to the giant white ball and look around there.  We saw a few other birds, some wildflowers, and even heard some Wood Frogs calling.

Samuel's Bird List

  1. Wild Turkey
  2. Mallard
  3. American Crow
  4. Canada Goose
  5. Red-winged Blackbird
  6. Song Sparrow
  7. European Starling
  8. Barn Swallow
  9. Tree Swallow
  10. American Goldfinch
  11. Common Raven
  12. Turkey Vulture
  13. Eastern Bluebird
  14. American Robin
  15. Blue Jay
  16. Ring-billed Gull
  17. Pine Warbler

When we returned to the car, we saw a helicopter in the sky.  We got in the car and sharp-eyed Grandpa spotted a pair of Eastern Bluebirds near one of the nest boxes.  Of course the female flew away, but we at least got a distant photo of the male.  They are so blue!

When we got home, we had a cheese sandwich for lunch; Sam rejected Grandpa's home-made pickles.
Then Sam wanted to go for a long bike ride, ending up at the park for a swing.

Sam fell asleep in the car, as we drove to meet Maman and David at the CLSC in Chelsea, where Sam was getting a vaccination.  We were held up by an accident, and were a bit late.

Sam was very brave and did not cry at all when he got his shot.
